Iraq visa questions from American travelers
Find answers about U.S. passports, documents, families, processing, and travel preparation. Select a question to read the answer.
Do U.S. citizens need a visa to visit Iraq?
Yes. U.S. citizens traveling on an American passport need a visa to visit federal Iraq. You can apply for an Iraq eVisa online before traveling.
Can I apply for an Iraq visa online with a U.S. passport?
Yes. Select United States as your nationality in our online application, enter your details, upload your passport copy and personal photo, and complete payment. We send your application result by email.
Do Americans need to get their Iraq visa before flying, or can they get one on arrival?
You must obtain your approved visa before flying to federal Iraq. Do not plan to arrange your visa on arrival. A submitted application or payment receipt does not replace an approved visa.
Do I need to visit an Iraqi embassy or mail my passport to apply?
No. For the tourist and short-visit applications supported through our online service, you do not need an embassy appointment or to mail your physical passport. Upload a digital passport copy and complete the process online.
What documents do I need to apply for an Iraq eVisa as a U.S. citizen?
Prepare a clear color copy of your U.S. passport’s information page and a recent personal photo. Use an email address you can access, and provide the personal and arrival information requested in the form. Enter your name and passport details exactly as they appear in your passport.
How much validity does my U.S. passport need to travel to Iraq?
Your passport must remain valid for at least six months from your intended arrival date in Iraq. If you need to renew it, complete the renewal before applying so your application uses the passport you will travel with.
Can I use a photo of my passport taken with my phone?
Yes, provided the image is clear and readable. Photograph the entire passport information page in color, showing all four corners. Avoid reflections, shadows, fingers covering the page, and blurred text. The machine-readable lines at the bottom must also be clear.
What kind of personal photo do I need for my Iraq visa application?
Use a recent color photo against a plain white background. Face the camera directly with your head straight and a neutral expression. Remove glasses and keep your face clearly visible without shadows. Do not use beauty filters or edit your facial features. See our passport and photo requirements.
Do American citizens need a sponsor or an invitation letter to visit Iraq?
U.S. passport holders applying through our tourist or short-visit route do not need to arrange their own local sponsor or invitation letter. Extending a stay or obtaining residency inside Iraq involves a separate process with different requirements.
Can I apply if I am visiting family or friends and staying at their home?
Yes. You can apply for a visit to family or friends. If you will stay at a private home, provide your actual accommodation details whenever requested. Describe the purpose of your visit accurately.
Can I use this application if I am traveling to Najaf or Karbala for a religious visit?
Yes. U.S. passport holders can apply through our service for religious visits to Iraq, including trips to Najaf and Karbala. Tell us that your trip is for a religious visit when providing your travel information. Apply ahead of time during busy pilgrimage periods. Read our religious visit guidance.
How long does an Iraq eVisa take for U.S. citizens, and when should I apply?
Our standard estimated processing time for U.S. passport holders is 6–72 hours, once payment and all required documents and information have been received. We recommend applying at least seven days before travel. Any processing update displayed in the application applies to your request. See our processing-time guidance.
My flight is coming up soon. Can I still apply?
You can apply, but approval before your flight cannot be guaranteed. Contact us with your departure date and time before submitting a last-minute request so we can explain the current processing estimate. You must receive your approved visa before traveling.
I am an American living outside the United States. Can I apply from where I live?
Yes. You do not need to be physically in the United States to apply. Select United States as your passport nationality and enter your actual country of residence wherever requested.
I have a U.S. green card but a passport from another country. Which nationality should I select?
Select the nationality shown on the passport you will use to travel to Iraq. A U.S. green card does not make you a U.S. passport holder. Your eligibility and processing requirements depend on your passport nationality. Provide your U.S. residency document if the application requests it.
Does my child need a separate Iraq visa if they have a U.S. passport?
Yes. A child traveling on a U.S. passport under this visa route needs their own application and approval, including infants. A parent or legal guardian should complete the application using the child’s passport details and personal photo.
Can I complete the applications for my spouse and children?
Yes. You may apply on behalf of your spouse with their permission and for your children as their parent or legal guardian. Enter each traveler’s own details and upload their documents. Use an email address you monitor to receive updates and the visas.
My spouse has a different nationality. Can we apply through the same website?
Yes, provided your spouse’s passport nationality is supported by our service. Select the correct nationality for each traveler. Different nationalities can have different requirements and processing times, so check both before applying.
How will I receive my Iraq eVisa?
We send your approved Iraq eVisa to the email address provided in your application. You must print the visa before traveling and carry the printed copy with your passport. A digital copy on your phone does not replace the required printed copy.
How can I check my application status?
Email [email protected] with your application number. Our team provides updates and requests additional documents by email. Check your spam or junk folder if you are expecting a message.
What should I do if my payment does not go through?
Check whether you received a payment or application confirmation before trying again. If the payment status is unclear, contact us with the error message and any application reference you received. Avoid creating repeated applications. See our application and payment help.
I already applied for an Iraq visa somewhere else. Should I submit another application?
Contact us before submitting another request. An existing application linked to your passport may prevent a new application from progressing. Share its reference number and current status so we can advise on the next step and help you avoid duplicate applications.
What should I do if I notice a mistake after submitting my application?
Reply to your application email immediately. Include your application number, explain the mistake, and provide the correct information or document. We will check whether a correction is still possible. Some details cannot be changed once the application has progressed or the visa has been issued.
What documents must I carry for airline check-in and arrival in Iraq?
You must carry your passport and a printed copy of your approved Iraq eVisa. Use the passport linked to your visa and check that the details match before traveling. Keep the printed visa available to present at airline check-in and immigration on arrival.
Before you travel to Iraq
You must print your approved Iraq eVisa. Carry the printed copy with the passport used in your application. A digital copy on your phone does not replace the required printed copy.
- Check that your name and passport number match your approval.
- Read the travel dates and conditions printed on your issued visa.
